Free Retirement Calculator with Social Security, 401(k) and Roth

Enter your age, savings, Social Security estimate and state, and cinder.fi shows how long your money lasts: year by year, after federal and state tax, with your 401(k), IRA, Roth and Social Security working together. It is free to start and needs no credit card.

Most retirement calculators handle federal taxes but ignore state taxes or apply a single national average. That’s a big gap. A retiree in California pays 9.3% state income tax on retirement income above $66,295. A retiree in Florida, Nevada, or Texas pays zero. On a $100,000 annual withdrawal that is roughly $9,000 per year, or about $270,000 over a 30-year retirement.

cinder.fi’s US retirement calculator includes federal and state tax engines for all 50 states. It models Traditional IRA, Roth IRA, 401(k), and HSA account types with correct contribution limits, Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs), and the tax treatment of withdrawals from each. Enter your account balances, expected contributions, Social Security estimate, and target spending, and cinder.fi projects your retirement year by year.

Social Security is central to US retirement planning. Claiming at 62 reduces your benefit by up to 30% from your full retirement age amount. Delaying to 70 increases it by 8% per year past full retirement age. The SSA’s retirement benefits page has official guidance on eligibility and benefit calculation. The right age depends on your health, other income, and whether you’re married. cinder.fi models your claiming age, the tax on your benefit and what a surviving spouse keeps.

Frequently asked questions

›How much do I need to retire in the US?

Enough that your savings, Social Security and any pension cover your spending after tax until the end of the plan. The 25x rule is a starting point, but it ignores taxes, your claiming age and which account you draw from. cinder.fi works it out year by year with federal and state tax for all 50 states, and shows the age your money lasts to.

›Does this retirement calculator include Social Security?

Yes. Enter your estimated benefit at full retirement age, or let cinder.fi estimate it from your income, then pick a claiming age from 62 to 70. The calculator applies the early-claiming reduction or delayed credits and taxes the benefit the way the IRS does.

›Does it handle 401(k), IRA and Roth accounts together?

Yes. Traditional and Roth 401(k)s, Traditional and Roth IRAs, HSAs and taxable accounts each keep their own tax treatment, with RMDs from 73. The projection shows what you withdraw from each account every year and the tax on it.

›Is this retirement calculator free?

Yes. The year-by-year projection, federal and state tax, Social Security timing and your Monte Carlo odds and band are free, with no credit card. Pro adds the Roth conversion strategy, a deeper Monte Carlo (your own runs and settings, the full percentiles) and the optimizer.

›Can I model Roth conversions?

Yes, with Pro. cinder.fi fills a tax bracket you choose with conversions each year between retirement and RMDs, and shows the effect on lifetime tax and IRMAA Medicare surcharges.
